Living in Onalaska, Texas on Lake Livingston

Onalaska is a lake town. It sits on the western side of Polk County along the shores of Lake Livingston, and much of daily life here revolves around the water: fishing in the morning, boating on the weekend and sunsets over the lake from the back porch.

The town started as a sawmill town in the early 1900s, built by lumberman William Carlisle and named after his mill in Onalaska, Arkansas. When the mill closed, the town got quiet for decades. Lake Livingston changed that. It brought new visitors, new businesses and new neighbors, and Onalaska has grown steadily since.

Lake access is easy. Kickapoo Creek and the U.S. 190 corridor are home to marinas, boat ramps, RV resorts and lodges, and the Lake Livingston/Onalaska KOA has its own marina and fishing pier. Texas Parks and Wildlife notes that the Kickapoo area north is one of the better spots for largemouth bass. The lake is also known for white bass and blue catfish. Back on land, Onalaska City Park has a playground and a dog park.

Onalaska ISD serves the community. Huntsville is approx. 30 miles west across the lake on U.S. 190. Livingston's shopping and services are a short drive east, and Houston is approx. 96 miles away.

Buyers here find a mix of waterfront and water-view homes, lake-area subdivisions, weekend places and wooded lots. Some lots come with deeded water access, and some are just a golf cart ride from a ramp. Every lakefront property has its own details on shoreline, permits and docks, and that's where a local broker helps.
