Living in Coldspring, Texas

Coldspring is the county seat of San Jacinto County, a small, friendly town tucked between the Sam Houston National Forest and the southwest shore of Lake Livingston. Local tradition says the town was named for the cold spring water found here. It has been the county seat since San Jacinto County was formed in 1870.

Coldspring is the closest of our area towns to Houston, approx. 64 miles away, and it's approx. 32 miles to Huntsville. That makes it a good fit for buyers who want a country address without a very long drive to the city.

There's no shortage of outdoor space. The Sam Houston National Forest covers approx. 163,000 acres across San Jacinto, Walker and Montgomery counties, and much of it is open to public hunting with the proper permits. Just south of town, Double Lake Recreation Area, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937, offers camping, swimming, fishing, a 21-mile mountain bike trail and access to the Lone Star Hiking Trail and Big Creek Scenic Area. On Lake Livingston, the Trinity River Authority's Wolf Creek Park near Coldspring has campsites, a marina store, fishing piers and boat ramps.

Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD serves the community. Property around Coldspring ranges from homes in town to wooded acreage near the national forest and lake-area homes and lots along the San Jacinto County shoreline.
